Staffordshire County Council - STARS

The Staffordshire County Council STARS (Sustainable Travel Accreditation and Recognition for Schools) project helps schools to create, develop, implement, monitor and maintain their own travel plan by offering a range of programmes.

Activities and initiatives have been developed to recognise and support STARS schools that have demonstrated a move to supporting sustainable travel choices on the journey to and from school. Staffordshire County Council were seeking enthusiastic and experienced providers to work with them and deliver key service areas.

Aspire were first commissioned by Staffordshire County Council in 2015 to work with STARS schools in the Tamworth district to promote and deliver balance bike training and scooter training. The programme focused on children in reception, year one and year two.

Following the delivery to over 1,200 children in phase one, Aspire were contracted to deliver the programme in three more Staffordshire County Council districts – Cannock, South Staffordshire and Lichfield – to a further 1,200 children.

As well as providing fully qualified instructors to deliver the balance bike and scooter training, Aspire also offered:

  • A value added service that made initial contact with the schools
  • Organised provision
  • Established healthy communication streams with the Connectivity Support Team
  • Completed administration tasks
  • Collated data
  • Collected anecdotal feedback from children and schools

"Aspire's organisation – from project management, back office administration and on ground delivery – has been incredibly good which has enabled the programme to not only be a success but we have been able to include a much larger number than originally thought. Feedback from all schools involved has been very positive throughout and they are now actively engaged in our project with outcomes being achieved.”

This is the 3rd time that my children have come to Aspire Active Camps, they love it and are already asking to go back! My younger daughter is brimming with confidence from her new-found sports skills and my older daughter has discovered a love for basketball. Top marks for the team all round!
